Brownie Pudding Layer Cake

Ingredients: 1 cup unsalted butter; 2 cups granulated sugar; 4 oz. unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped; ½ cup granulated sugar; ½ tsp. salt; 2 tbsp. cornstarch or arrowroot; 2 tbsp. cornstarch or arrowroot; 4 large eggs, lightly beaten; 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract; 1 tsp. baking powder; 1⅓ cups unbleached, all-purpose flour; 4 to 5 cups thinly sliced fresh strawberries (2 pt.); Confectioners’ sugar, sifted; 2 tbsp. unsalted butter, softened to room temperature; 2½ tsp. pure vanilla extract; 2 cups milk, whole or 2 percent; 2 large egg yolks, lightly beaten; ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted; ⅛ tsp. salt

Chocolate pudding and sliced strawberries between brownie cake . . . what could be simpler and more satisfying? (I know—two slices!) I’d hate to have you go through all the trouble of using great ingredients and then make 3 cups of instant pudding, so I’m including my favorite chocolate pudding recipe (in case you’re feeling ambitious or nostalgic!).
