In a small saucepan, bring the sugar and milk to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. (This will take almost no time with superfine sugar.)
In a small bowl, gradually whisk ½ cup of the hot syrup into egg yolks. Return mixture to saucepan; stir constantly over low heat just until mixture begins to simmer
