A very festive sweet rice to serve with bobotie, sosaties or denningvleis.


  • 500 ml water
  • 250 ml uncooked long grain rice
  • 2 pieces


Bring water to boil. Add rice, cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric and salt, and cook, uncovered, until quite soft, about 20 minutes. Drain in a colander and rinse with hot water. Return rice to saucepan with almonds and sugar, and dot with butter or margarine. Steam, covered, over medium heat for about 10 minutes, stirring lightly every now and then. Add about 50
