This is an old Cuban dish from Oriente province. The recipe was given me by my friend Nieves Rendueles who was given it by her mother-in-law. It has been handed down through the generations, and goes back to early colonial times when the family received land grants from the Spanish crown. The pastry is particularly interesting.
