In France, when the proverbial ham-and-cheese sandwich is grilled, it rises to new culinary heights and is called a Croque Monsieur. Some versions are dipped in egg before cooking, but I think my way is so easy and offers almost instant gratification. You can also make the sandwiches with sliced turkey or chicken from the deli. I like to turn the sandwiches a couple of times to get those appealing cross-hatch grill marks on the bread.
