My sophomore year in college was my first experience living in an apartment on my own. When I got to school that year, I realized that I didn’t even know how to make cornbread, so I wrote my mother and asked her to send me the recipe. She replied on a postcard: “To two cups of buttermilk, add an egg and leavened meal to thicken. Bake in a hot skillet till golden brown.” I got her to give me more precise instructions and have been making it myself now for over fifty years.
