Grasshopper pie was one of the signature desserts served at the old Fort Sumter Hotel in Charleston. Before it was converted into condos in the 1980s, the hotel had an elegant restaurant called the Rampart Room that wrapped around the side that faced the harbor.
Now, I was a constant source of embarrassment to my mother as a child in that I was a something of a tomboy—and, as she used to say, “a blunderbuss.” My brother
