In Vienna all the best cakes have stories attached to them and the recipes are closely guarded secrets. The Sacher Torte, a chocolate cake flavoured with apricot, is so famous that it spawned a hotel, a cafe and an international delivery business. The recipe is still a secret but a close resemblance can be achieved.

Here’s how the story goes: Franz Sacher was 16 and an apprentice in the kitchens at the Vienna palace of his employer Prince Metternich
