This is a lovely dish to serve as an appetizer or as one of several main courses. Stir-fried beef is added to a delicious sauce that fuses Chinese five-spice powder, Japanese miso paste, sake, mirin, soy sauce, rice vinegar, stock and sugar. The sauce is reduced in the wok to give the beef a glorious thick, sweet and savory coating. The fusion of Chinese and Japanese ingredients and flavors marries well, and works not only with beef but chicken thighs or salmon fillets too.
