Tutti-frutti, colored chunks of candied fruits, has been combined with ice cream in England since the 1860s, either mixed into the ice cream itself, dotted on top, or both. Nowadays, the term often refers to Indian candied papaya, but in the Victorian era, English cooks would have more commonly turned to candied citrus, cherries, and angelica. Look for the Indian product, typically labeled “tutti-frutti mix,” in South Asian grocery stores and online.
