This is one of the simplest apple cakes, and one of the best. A plain, buttery batter is poured over sliced apples, and the whole thing bakes up to a subtle cake that showcases the flavor of the fresh fruit. An excellent version of an old-fashioned genre, this tender cake is also good made with firm pears, peaches or plums.
