In every konditerei (bakery-café) in Germany, you’ll find buttery plain sandtorte, baked in fluted kugelhopf molds and sprinkled with a snowdrift of powdered sugar.
Similar to pound cake, this buttery cake is named for its sandy texture. It’s one of the best unadorned cakes, the kind of thing people keep in the kitchen just to “have something around” in case people drop by.
