Ingredients: 1½ teaspoons instant espresso powder; ¾ cup confectioners’ sugar; 2–3 tablespoons strong-brewed coffee; 2 tablespoons instant coffee, preferably instant espresso powder; 1 tablespoon hot water; 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour; ½ teaspoon baking soda; 1 teaspoon baking powder; 1 cup sour cream or plain yogurt; 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract; 2 tablespoons instant coffee, preferably instant espresso powder; 1 cup sour cream or plain yogurt; ¾ cup (1½ sticks) unsalted butter, softened; ¼ teaspoon salt; 2 large eggs; 1 cup sugar

I developed this cake, made with and meant to be served with coffee, a few years ago for a magazine article. After that, I forgot about it for quite a while. Years later, Gourmet included it in its collection of 50 dessert recipes to commemorate the magazine’s 50th year.
