Like chess pie and pecan pie, buttermilk pie can be baked in any season, when there’s little fresh fruit in the larder. If you’ve never tried it, buttermilk pie is like custard pie, but with a gently mellow flavor that’s almost like cheesecake. It’s plain and wonderfully smooth. I like it best without the meringue that often tops it.
