  • cup packed dark or light brown sugar
  • cup unsulfured molasses
  • 1 cup dark soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Asian chili-garlic sauce, or to taste

Method

COMBINE THE SUGAR with cup water in a saucepan, and bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Add the molasses, soy sauce, and five-spice powder, and simmer for 5 minutes or until lightly thickened. Remove from the heat and stir in the lime juice and chili-garlic sauce. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to a month.
