Hawaiian Chicken and Long-Grain Rice

I want to move now from Hawaii to Indonesia—which used to be called the Dutch East Indies, and even today, Indonesian cooking is very popular in Holland.

In fact, this recipe became such a favourite with the Dutch that it is now regarded as one of their traditional dishes. The last time I had it was in Amsterdam. It’s called Nasi Goreng, or Indonesian Fried Rice.

Before I give you the recipe, I’d just like to tell you of a quaint old Indonesian custom. In Java, rice was thou
