Peel and slice the potatoes finely and sprinkle them with salt and pepper.

Take a rather flat fireproof dish, butter it well and place a thin layer of sliced potatoes in it. Sprinkle with grated cheese, then cover with another layer of potatoes sprinkled with cheese, and continue in alternate layers until the casserole is full. Mix the beaten egg with the milk and pour this mixture over
