A pecan pie is basically a very sweet custard with pecans baked into it. Both chopped pecans and whole pecan halves are used for this recipe, the former mixed into the filling and the latter used to decorate the top. While you can buy only pecan halves and chop some of them, you will spend less money if you buy halves for the decorative finish and chopped pecans for the custard. Because the filling is very sweet, you will probably want to use an unsweetened dough for the crust.
