Also referred to as a tree tomato, the gentle sweetness of tamarillo is enhanced by cooking. It has a pleasant savoury, bitter edge that lends itself perfectly to serving alongside a sharp, nutty mature cheese. You can also serve the poached fruit with vanilla yoghurt cream, a buttermilk panna cotta or layered blackcurrants, meringues and cream, or add them to a buttery sweet pastry tart shell.
