St. Martin’s Croissants

The 11th of November is St. Martin’s Day. In Poznań, that means rogale świętomarcińskie, St. Martin’s croissants. St. Martin was a Roman soldier who, one winter night, encountering a beggar, cut his cloak in half and gave it to the poor man. When St. Martin went to sleep, he dreamed he saw Jesus wearing the cloak. While European countries all celebrate St. Martin’s Day differently, Poznań celebrates a second dream, this one from the nineteenth century, in which a local baker imagined he saw
