  • 3 cups buttermilk
  • 2 large sweet onions, such as Maui or Walla Walla, cut into thin rounds and separated into rings

Method

In a large bowl, put the buttermilk and onions and toss to coat. Let stand for 1 hour. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, garlic powder, chile powder, and salt.

In a deep skillet or saucepan, heat 2 inches of the oil to 350°F. In batches, coat onions rings in the seasoned flour mixture. Fry for 2 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and keep warm in a low oven whi
