Crispy Wontons

When my mother began making a name for herself as a caterer in the late 1970s, she met Sean Connery, who became an investor in her first restaurant. Sean brought Robert Redford to a party she was catering. I was a server at the party (my mother believed in Chinese child labor) and in all my preteen awkwardness and braces, I walked up to him with a platter of my mother’s delicious wontons. Knees buckling, I said, “Would you like a Chinese wonton, Mr. Redford?” He couldn’t ha
