  • 10 oz. sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons black treacle
  • 2 oz. butter
  • 1 dessertspoon vinegar


Place all ingredients in a saucepan. Boil steadily for about 12 minutes, or until a small amount dropped in cold water forms a firm ball (300–3 10°F.). Pour into a shallow greased tin, about 8 inches square. When beginning to set, mark into squares with a knife which has been dipped in oil.
