Potted shrimps is about as English as it gets! Originally from Lancashire and probably made with shrimps from Morecambe Bay they have been popular since the 18th century. They would once have been pounded to a paste with possibly some whole prawns for added texture and they have always been served with thin slices of brown bread and butter and a mound of watercress. Although it is fiddly to do and, yes, you can buy them ready potted, they will always taste better if you make them yourself.
