Mackerel really must be eaten within a couple of days of being caught, so check - I know it’s a difficult one... and your fishmonger may get offended if you ask him if it’s really fresh. I was spoilt as a kid, as we would catch them by the dozens off the local pier and end up using them for bait. When I did get round to eating them, the flavour was as good as you can get from fresh fish. Since then I have had very sensitive taste buds to these little scavengers of the sea.
