Jamu is an Indonesian traditional herbal drink. This particular drink is characterized by its bright yellow color, due to the usage of turmeric. To make this recipe, choose a young tamarind with a lighter color.

  • 1.5 liter water
  • 2 sheets pandanus leaves
  • 5 sheets lime leaves
  • 30 gr fresh turmeric, sliced
  • 75 gr Java tamarind
  • 250 gr palm sugar
  • 40 gr sugar
  • 4 gr salt (about teaspoon)

  1. Pour water into a large stock pot. Add all other ingredients. Bring to boil over low heat. Strain the liquid, discard the solids. Set aside to cool.
  2. Drink kunyit asam while it’s warm or add ice cube if you prefer to have it more refreshing cold drinks.

Turn a traditional herbal drink into an exotic cocktail. Wet the rim of each glass and dip it into a mixture of sea salt and chilli flakes.
