The ‘austerity’ 1950s version of the recipe on which this is based calls for the pastries to be rolled in oatmeal or desiccated coconut. They are even better with almonds. The way I like to prepare the nuts for this is to take flaked almonds and process them briefly so that I am left with small flakes; I prefer this texture to that of chopped whole almonds.
