I devised this recipe one Christmas when I was tired of looking at a depleted bowl of nuts and bored of cracking them, with bits of shell all over the table. So I cracked the whole lot and pulverised them in the food-processor, using them to make macaroons. The mixed nuts were fine, but even better was a second version made only with hazelnuts. Of course, one can now buy ground hazelnuts very readily, so these are a very easy option for afternoon tea.
