The Guelaguetza, also called Lunes del Cerro (Monday of the Hill), is held on the Cerro del Fortin in Oaxaca in July, in pre-Hispanic times it was one of the celebrations in which the Indian peoples honored the deity of corn, Centeotl, and prayed for good harvests. Like other pagan traditions, it survived by becoming mixed with Catholic practices. Even now members of the pre-Columbian civilizations would recognize parts of the celebration. During the festival the whole city parties, and mag
