Tyaamatar is the Nepali word for “tamarillo” or “tree tomato,” an attractive egg-shaped fruit with meaty pulp and seeds. It has a tough, bitter skin and is very tart but flavorful when ripe. Although the tamarillo resembles a plum tomato in color and shape, it is not a true tomato. In Nepal, tamarillos are used primarily in chutneys such as this one.
