The recipe for this simple and delicious dish was given to me by a lady from Patras, a town on the western coast of the Peloponnese.

Red mullet is a delicious Mediterranean goatfish, not related to the American gray mullet. Red mullet is sometimes available in American fishmarkets that specialize in Mediterranean fish. A good western hemisphere substitute, if you can find it, is Caribbean red goatfish.
