The chañar tree bears fruit that is the same size and shape of an olive. It can be eaten fresh, or made into jellies or prepared liquors. Chañar fruit was an important part of the diet of the first inhabitants of the Atacama. Chañar syrup is quite difficult to find outside Chile, but you can replace it with your favourite fruit syrup: pomegranate, fig or raspberry syrups would all work well in this recipe.
