On the eve of St Martin’s Day, 11 November, children walk with lanterns through the streets, singing traditional songs. On the day itself, especially in the south of Germany, many people mark the saint’s day by eating roast goose. Red cabbage is the perfect accompaniment, and you could also serve some potato dumplings to complete the meal.
