This kind of baked custard, or flan, is very popular in Colombia and Venezuela. There are several variations, some made with cream cheese or coconut as well as this coffee-flavoured version. Flan de café is always served cold, and makes a great end to any meal.

Ingredients

  • 90 g/ oz/1 cup ground coffee

  1. First prepare the coffee, in a small pan bring 350ml/12fl oz/1½ cups water to the boil.

  2. Remove from the heat and add the ground coffee, cover and set aside for 3-5 minutes, then strain the coffee mixture through a fine sieve muslin (cheesecloth),
