When Rio de Janeiro was Brazil’s capital, so many government ministers ate at the Cosmopolita restaurant that it became known as ‘The Little Senate’. One politician, Oswaldo Aranha, always ordered a thick fillet steak covered in toasted garlic. This was later incorporated into the restaurant’s menu and is now popular all over Rio.

Ingredients

  • 15 ml/1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 fillet steak, about 400g/14oz

Method

1 Heat the oil in a frying pan over a high heat. Add the steak and fry on both sides until medium-rare, or done to your liking. Transfer to a warm plate and leave to rest.
