The first of November is All Saint’s Day, Todos los Santos. It’s the time to gorge on chestnuts and sweet potatoes cooked on the open fire. It’s also the day of the dead, when family graves are traditionally visited. All over Spain pastelería windows are packed with trays of macabre-looking saint’s bones made out of marzipan.

The Catalans have their own speciality, panallets, tiny almond cakes that are eaten with a glass of sweet wine at the end of a meal.
