Rhubarb is a staple in German gardens. My grandmother, aunt, and mom always had it growing. Some days, I joined my grandmother to weed and harvest in her garden, which grew in a designated patch in the farm fields. In Germany, all farm fields are outside the villages. Even farmers have their acreages away from their houses. Farmers usually live around the edge of the village with easy access to their fields. Roads in between acres are paved to create passage for tractors and farm equipment.
