If you really want to emphasize the chilly side of a cocktail, it’s hard to beat a cucumber—so here’s my take on a classic gimlet. If you are lucky to have a cucumber vine in your garden, grab a couple of flowers for a sunny garnish.

Ingredients

  • 4 (1-inch/2.5-cm) chunks of cucumber
  • 6 basil leaves

Method

Chill two stemmed cocktail glasses by filling them with ice.

In the bottom of a cocktail shaker, muddle the cucumber and basil. Fill the shaker with ice, then add the gin, lime juice, simple syrup, and salt. Shake well. Pour out the ice in the glasses and strain the mixture into them. Garnish each glass with a cucumber flower, if available.
