When the meet of the Devon and Somerset staghounds was in the neighbourhood of Dulverton, Oakford and Stoodleigh, it was the custom of Mrs. Arthur Hillyard (wife of the Rector of Stoodleigh) to have a cold luncheon set from 12 to 3 o’clock in the dining-room, and it was also the custom to put on the fire, early in the day, a huge pot of what was known as Irish Stew, so that anyone could have a good plate of hot stew as well as cold meat and sweets.
