Beer Cake

Miss Heath, of Lyghe, Tonbridge, sends this and two other recipes which are over a hundred years old, but which she has recently had made and eaten, and knows to be good. She says: ‘With regard to the decline of English cookery, my mother who was born in 1826 used to say that ‘when kitcheners came in good cookery went out.’ I think she meant that with the open range of her youth, bread, cakes, etc., had to be baked in a brick oven and meat roasted on a spit in front of the
