  • About

In the old days when wheaten cakes were a luxury, they were associated with special feasts and each had a story. LadyGomme, the first President of the English Folk Cookery Association, relates most charmingly the sad adventure of a Johnny Cake. It was customary it appears for the housewife when she made bread to take a piece of the dough and shape it as a boy or man with currants for his eyes and mouth; currants also were used to represent the buttons on his coat.
