Banbury Cakes

A recipe ‘To make very good Banbury cakes’ is given by Markham in his English Hus-wife (1615) but it is so involved that although interesting as a record of cakes made in Elizabethan days it is useless in its original form. The following has therefore been extracted for modern use without destroying its character.
