‘This recipe,’ says Mrs. Oswell, ‘is I think my own. I have never seen it in any cookery book. I used it at camp, and one of the Commissioners from the World Guide Camp, Hants, sent to me for it. It is an excellent way of using up left-over bread.’

Butter (or margarine), golden syrup
sugar
bread, slices ½ inch thick, soaked in

Method

Soak the bread in milk.
Put the butter, syrup and sugar in a shallow pan.
Stir over heat till it browns.
Then put in the bread and cover with the mixture.
Leave for two minutes and serve quickly.
