This is a Midlothian recipe; clove July Flowers are the old-fashioned strong-scented carnations.

Ingredients

  • Flower petals 1 lb.
  • water 1 quart
  • cloves

Method

  1. Cut off the white ends of the petals.
  2. Put them with the water and cloves into a stone jar.
  3. Tie it up close with paper and place it in a pot of cold water.
  4. Boil it up and let it boil 5 or 6 hours, taking care to add some more hot water from time to time, nor let the water boil into the jar.
