I HAVE FOND MEMORIES OF TREACLE TART. WHEN I WAS A CHILD IT WAS ALWAYS A TOSS UP BETWEEN A BAKEWELL AND A TREACLE TART FROM OUR LOCAL BAKERY. ALTHOUGH IT’S VERY RICH, I STILL LIKE THE COMPLETE AND UTTER SUGAR HIT THIS TART DELIVERS. IT IS WELL WORTH THE TOTAL INDULGENCE.

Ingredients

Pastry:

  • 225 g plain flour, plus extra to dust
  • pinch of salt
  • 100 g

Method

  1. To make the pastry, sift the flour and salt into a large bowl, add the butter and rub together with your fingertips until the mixture resembles crumbs. Stir in the sugar. Beat the egg yolk with 25ml water, then gradually mix into the crumb mixture until the dough begins to hold together. Gather the dough and press into a flat disc.
