Sweet potatoes were introduced to European culture by Christopher Columbus, who found them cultivated on the Caribbean island of St. Thomas. Often called yams, they are not even related to those much-larger, sweeter, and darker tubers that grow in Latin America—nor are they related to white potatoes.
