How to pick crabs

Before you can pick a crab, you have to cook it. Boil or steam live blue crabs in a large pot for about 10 minutes or longer, which turns them from blue to deep red. We used a little salt in the boiling water. Some folks add all kinds of spices, even beer, but if you’re picking the crab for meat to use in a recipe, it doesn’t make much difference.
