Conchs and whelks are really just large seagoing snails. We used to gather whelks (which we called “conchs”) on the Bloody Point beach at Daufuskie’s south end. They would be buried in the muddy areas, with just the tips of their shells showing at low tide. If you didn’t know what you were looking for, you wouldn’t notice them.
