Nonna Mary, my mother’s mother, was an expert at frying, and it was always a treat for me when she made this fried dough topped with powdered sugar. She called them chiacchere della Nonna, which means “Grandma’s chatter.” They are also sometimes known as frappe. My mother would also occasionally make them, though not often enough.
