These soft, flat, puffy breads are the staff of life in Israel, and while it’s easy to find commercial pita bread in the United States, ids fun to make your own. This recipe comes from my stepson, Jake Klein, who learned to make it on the Kibbutz Kfar Hanassi in Rosh Pina near the Golan Heights.

Ingredients

  • 1 package dry yeast
  • cups flour, or as needed

Method

  1. Combine the yeast and cups flour in the bowl of a mixer. Mix in the water, oil, salt, and sugar. Mix on low speed for 3 minutes, then on high speed, for 3 minutes. Turn off the mixer.
